Red is a very powerful color in witchcraft and a red candle can be used to amplify the power of a spell that is being cast - though this can be dangerous if the practitioner is not 100% positive s/he is casting safely.

The most common use though - and most dangerous use - is for casting love spells. Love spells are incredibly dangerous and, unless done by an experienced practitioner are generally considered black magic. Any spell that intentionally removes the free will of another individual is bad.

Red candles can be used for safe love spells - where a person is encouraged to take notice of another person's positive attributes, but not forced to do. They can also be used to encourage a person to express their true feelings without being embarrassed - especially useful for when you have a crush on a shy person.
