Aromatherapy, an alternative to other health treatments, uses fragrance (aroma) of essential oils and other aromatic extracts from plants for improving a person's psychological and physical health.
Although it is true that aromatherapy can not cure major diseases, but it is also true that it does much more than just smell good.
1.Essential oils used in aromatherapy, are considered to be antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Thus aromatherapy can be used to ease pains and heal minor wounds and cuts.
2. Expectorant properties of essential oils like eucalyptus, menthol, camphor etc. can be used for improvement of respiratory system during cough and cold.
3. Anti-depressing and stimulating nature of essential oils can be of great use for relaxation and stress relief. They improve the circulatory system, regulate hormones, relax muscles and also stimulate the immune system.
4. The reflexology in aromatherapy is an effective treatment for cancer patients.
5. The sense of smell in aromatherapy, can have a great impact on behavioral aspects and can be used for mood enhancement. When inhaled, it stimulates the Limbic system of our brain and thus result in release of endorphins, neurotransmitters and other 'feel-good' chemicals.
