Make sure you DON'T nap through the day, and get some exercise. It sounds like you may have a small stress issue, or something on your mind, causing your insomnia.
I have found that I have some small aches and pains that are just enough to keep me from sleeping, so I take a couple of Advil before bed, if I feel the aches and pains coming on. This helps me relax enough to sleep at least 6 hours before waking up again.
I also try to read an "easy read" book, to keep my mind off things that are worrying me, till I can go to sleep. Hope you can find an answer for your sleepless nights.

Dear slamo
You need to improve your sleep hygiene. It is the term that is used to call non pharmacological sleep improvement.
For that you need to,
Use the bed only for sleep and sex
Do not drink coffee, tea or alcohol before sleep
Do not sleep in the day
Keep a regular time for sleep
Doing physical exercises Four hours before going into sleep will help.

The Tips I would give is made your bedroom sleep savy. Do not use TV or computer in bedroom. Get rid of any Red LED lights this are disruptive to sleep as well. Remove anything you can focus on that is negitvie such as old boyfriend stuffy or things that make you sad /.. All out of the bed room. Then go to bed the same time each night to set your self up for sleep.
Set a bed time routine. do the same thing to program your body to start winding down. Have a class of milk before bed as part of your routine. When you can sleep get up and do something Quiet like reading with out TV or computer. As soon as you feel drowzey return to bed. This will take a week or two but if you stick with it, it will work.
My husband had same problem and it worked wonders for him.

It sounds really ridiculous but try, (in addition to the excellent suggestions above), imagining that it is morning alredy and that you have just hit the snooze button on your alarm clock. That soothing feeling of having just 9 more minutes to sleep is often all it takes to put me out all night, no matter how uncomfortable I am. It sounds like a joke, but once you get done laughing and get ready for bed, try it! Hope it helps you as much as me!

There are some great tips above, probably a lot of them you're already aware of. Something I do to fall asleep and have been doing for years is have white noise going in the back ground. I can't fall asleep unless I have it now. It tends to drowned out my thoughts when I just can't seem to shut my mind down.
I use a box fan pointed at me. You can switch the speed to adjust to the noise level you want. I tend to get hot at night so this works very well for me. However, if you have allergies or are prone to getting cold at night you'll want to point the fan away from you(it can aggravate allergies).
You can use many sources of white noise. A box fan may not be loud enough, you can try a TV turned on to a static channel as well. You might just have to put a blanket over the screen. You also may have to experiment with a few different things to see what pitch and volume work for you. Some people like a much deeper rumble type sound, some vacuums produce a deeper sound.
That's the best trick I've got for you. I hope it helps and you are able to get some sleep soon!
