How often do you wash your hair?

Washing your hair too often can strip out essential oils. But wanting to keep it clean is important too. How do you keep the balance? How often do you wash your hair?

I have very chemically processed hair, so to keep it from drying out I wash it probably 3 times per week - not more than every other day. If I can blow dry it in between washings and get another day out of it I will. It just depends how my hair is looking and feeling if I can eek out another day.

Answer 2/34 - Submitted 1/7/2011

I think that everyone's hair is different so this might not apply to everyone. But I have found that washing my hair at lest every-other day with shampoo keeps my hair clean while also retaining natural oils that hair needs to grow and stay healthy. Like I said though, some people have more natural oils in their hair, and some have less. The key is finding a good balance for you by going different amounts of time without washing your hair. Just don't wait too long or people will notice you have dirty-greasy hair!

Answer 3/34 - Submitted 1/7/2011

This all depends upon what type of activity you do and if your hair gets dirty each day as well as your hair texture. I would recommend washing your hair once every two weeks.

Answer 4/34 - Submitted 1/7/2011

I wash my hair every day. If I don't wash it in the shower it gets greasy. I have really fine hair so it needs attention to stay clean. I wash my hair daily but I don't see any negative consequences. My hair has always been really healthy and soft. Everyone's hair is different though and requires different routines to keep it clean.

Answer 5/34 - Submitted 1/7/2011

If i'm at work/seeing a lot of people then every other day. If not and at weekend I try to make it stretch but it always looks crap on the day after a wash and afterwards. I bought this dry shampoo in brown colour which keeps me going on the second day and other days, you just spray it in and brush and it hides any grease and makes your hair look pretty nice again.

Answer 6/34 - Submitted 1/7/2011

I have medium-short platinum blonde hair, so I don't wash it very often, maybe once a week-and I use dry shampoo if necessary. When I had natural, waist length hair I still only washed 3 times a week maximum.
Even those with healthy hair oughn't wash more than 3 times weekly. Washing too frequently makes your hair produce more oil to make up for what's lost during washing. Start washing every two days, and soon your scalp will adjust!

Answer 7/34 - Submitted 1/7/2011

I wash my hair often but now and then i use dry shampoo

Answer 8/34 - Submitted 1/10/2011

Every other day as a rule.....I think it makes for a good balance. You're not going too long in between but you are giving your hair a day in between so it won't get too dried out

Answer 9/34 - Submitted 1/18/2011

My hair is long and very dry, so I generally wash my hair once a week, maybe twice. I use leave-in conditioner between washes to help freshen up my curls and keep my hair from looking seriously dry. I could probably go a week and a half to two weeks between washings, but it starts to get a bit oily at the roots after a week or so.

I think curly hair doesn't get as oily as straighter hair. When my hair was straight I needed to wash it every day or every other day. My hair turned curly a few years back, and has been drier since.

Answer 10/34 - Submitted 1/18/2011

It really depends on how your hair is. Mine gets very oily very fast. I wash my hair everyday before work but on weekends I give my hair a break for one day. During the work week I have wednesdays off so usually I don't wash my hair from tuesday morning till thursday morning. I also dye my hair every few months so its good to let the oils sit in the ocaisonally. Hope this helps!

Answer 11/34 - Submitted 1/18/2011

I wash and condition my hair daily. I use Panteen products. This works well for me, I never have a dry scalp or dry hair. If I didn't wash my hair daily is would get oily.

Answer 12/34 - Submitted 1/18/2011

I wash my hair about every three days. It depends what type of hair you have. If you have natural, healthy hair, you're probably okay to wash it more often. If your hair has gone through a lot of chemical processes, then it dries out pretty easily and sometimes (when it's been bleached a lot) doesn't need washing more than once a week, but it always depends on the person.

Answer 13/34 - Submitted 1/22/2011

I wash my hair everyday with a natural shampoo. I would like to wash it less but it gets too oily no matter which shampoo is used. Sometimes, like on the weekend I may get away with skipping a day. I have read about people using no shampoo and their hair stays nice, but I haven't gotten brave enough to try it yet.

Answer 14/34 - Submitted 1/22/2011

Every other day

Answer 15/34 - Submitted 1/22/2011

I used to wash my hair every day. Then my hair stylist told me that my hair was getting dry, and to try to wash it every other day, so that is my normal routine now. Even without washing it every day, it doesn't get overly oily, and it feels much healthier.

Answer 16/34 - Submitted 1/22/2011

I wash what little hair I have once a day, while I'm in the shower. I have very little hair partly because I'm a dude, and mostly because I just don't have all that much hair. I do find that my hair looks healthier, but ends up being much more oily if I go a few hours longer than normal without a shower.

Once a day has seemed to be the number for me. My hair never seems to get too dry, or too oily. I am a manly man, and probably wouldn't notice the difference either way.

Answer 17/34 - Submitted 1/22/2011

This might sound really gross, but I also heard that washing your hair too often was damaging. However when I went even just a day without washing it my hair would get really greasy. I read a way to overcome this was to not wash your hair for a month, and then start washing it just twice a week. SOmething about not washing your hair for that long cuts down on the oil production. I would still shower regularly and rinse my hair, but I didn't put any shampoo or conditioner in it for the entire four weeks. Even though it was a hard month, filled with lots of hats and headscarves, it really worked. My hair looks better and healthier than ever, and I only shampoo twice a week. I save of shampoo and conditioner as well!

Answer 18/34 - Submitted 1/23/2011

I only wash it once a week. If I work out and perspire heavily then I'll shampoo more often. It's o.k. to wash more often - even daily -but wish a shampoo designed for daily use. I highlight my hair so to keep the color longer, I shampoo less.

Answer 19/34 - Submitted 8/9/2011

I used to wash my hair twice in a week with a dry shampoo.

Answer 20/34 - Submitted 8/9/2011

I'm able to wash my hair with shampoo only three days a week and it still looks OK. The other days I still get it wet in the shower and style as usual. I think this works best for people with thicker curlier hair. Oiliness shows up a little quicker for those with thin straight hair .

Answer 21/34 - Submitted 8/9/2011

I tend to wash my hair about two times a week on average. I have quite long hair and it takes a while to wash. Also it is very fine and if I wash it too often it tends to go 'fly away'

I like to use a good quality shampoo that smells nice as well. I then put on a little conditioner and that makes my hair really smooth and soft.

My hair is not dyed or anything else like that. I only really go to the hairdressers twice a year unless it is a special occasion.

Answer 22/34 - Submitted 8/9/2011

I wash every other day. This way I don't strip the oils as much and my hair seems to be the healthiest. The only exception is if I am going out somewhere special. In that case, I will wash it again whether or not I have washed it the day before.

Answer 23/34 - Submitted 8/9/2011

Although I know it's not the best, I wash my hair everyday. My hair does get slightly greasy if I do not. If I had drier hair, I would wash it every other day.

Answer 24/34 - Submitted 8/9/2011

I was my hair approximately every other day. This seems to do the trick. I've heard that if you wash your hair everyday its not good for your scalp and hair.

Answer 25/34 - Submitted 8/19/2011

How often you should wash your hair depends on several things, including your type of hair, your activities, and your lifestyle.

I tend to wash my hair two to three times a week, depending on what I am doing. I have very thick hair. If I were to wash it every day, not only would I spend way too much time trying to dry it, but if would be too fluffy and fly away. The natural oils actually condition my hair and keep it in control.

My husband, on the other hand has very fine hair. He needs to wash it daily, sometimes more often than that, depending on whether he is going out, etc. His hair looks greasy by the next morning. When he is working hard, he sweats, too, which means he needs to wash it, even if he has already washed it that morning.

So I guess what I'm saying is, you need to find your balance with washing your hair. What is appropriate for one person would be too much for another and not enough for someone else. As long as you feel clean and your hair looks clean and healthy, you are probably all right.

Answer 26/34 - Submitted 1/20/2012

I wash my hair daily. I know hair can easily dry out, that's why I use a good conditioner at least once a week. I also try to use a shampoo that's not too harsh.

Answer 27/34 - Submitted 1/21/2012

When I was working, I washed my hair everyday at 2am, except weekends. I worked from 4am-1pm.

Now that I am retired I wash my hair every time I take a shower which is usually every other day.

Sometimes I might have places to go everyday and will take a shower everyday. If that is the case, I will wash my hair while taking my shower.

I do condition it every time with an instant conditioner when I am still in the shower.

Answer 28/34 - Submitted 2/17/2012

I have long, healthy hair and have always tried to do what's best to keep it that way. This includes not washing it too often. In general, I would say it gets washed (and conditioned!) between 3-4 times a week.
Of course this varies slightly depending on:
Time of year (summer versus winter)
Exercise (heavy versus light exertions)
Employment status (why waste water?)

Answer 29/34 - Submitted 2/17/2012

I keep my hair short, and it looks floppy and dead if I don't wash it every day.

When I wash it I only give it one shampooing with a little bit of shampoo, though. Maybe a teaspoon or a little more than that. Half a tablespoon at the most.

Answer 30/34 - Submitted 2/17/2012

My hair stylist said use olive oil shampoo and conditioner every day and ur hair will stay clean and there will still be oil on it works really well. I can now keep my hair clean without ruining it.

Answer 31/34 - Submitted 2/18/2012

I wash it every other day. On a day that I don't wash it, I use dry shampoo, cause my hair doesn't hold for long.

Answer 32/34 - Submitted 3/3/2012

It really depends inthe condition of my hair and scalp. I wash it everyday when during the summer when my scalp feels the most oily an sweaty. Then in th winter I wash every other day or every two days because the col weather makes my scalp dry.

I'm also very careful about the kind of shampoo and conditioner I use depending on the changes to my hair and scalp. If I'm washing everyday, I use a more gentle sulfate free or treatment shampoo so I don't strip my hair and scalp of essential oils. In the winter I use a regular shampoo but a stronger conditioner to combat dryness.

Again, it's about being flexible because one size doesn't fit all. We all have different scalp & hair conditions as well as lifestyles.

Answer 33/34 - Submitted 3/3/2012

In the past I used to wash my hair every 3 days, however as of 2 years ago I have started washing it once a week. I found that my hair is healthier now not just because of how often I wash it, but also because I cut back on jells, hair sprays and hairblowers and such harmful equipments.

Answer 34/34 - Submitted 3/3/2012

Once a day in the morning when I take my showers.
